Contino is part-owned by CVNE and the wines are made by them. Indeed this was among the pioneering “Château style” wineries established in the Rioja region. There is a total of some 60 ha of vineyards, 4ha of which are Graciano. There is an attractive Reserva red which has good depth and is supple and velvety in texture. A traditionally styled Gran Reserva adds greater depth and is unusually available only in magnums. This along with a big dollop of Graciano will enable the wine to develop nicely in bottle. As well as these, there is a Blanco which is sin crianza in style and is a blend of Viura, Malvasia and Garnacha Blanca. The top two reds are among the best in the region and both are single vineyard wines. The Viña del Olivo comes from a blend of roughly 90% Tempranillo and the balance Graciano. It is a modern style with the malolactic taking place in French oak with further ageing for 15 months. The Graciano is similarly fermented in large French oak vats and then aged in new French and Hungarian oak. These are both impressive, structured ageworthy reds. (DM)
