Core Family Winery Santa Barbara County
Small, recently established Rhône-style specialist based in Santa Maria but sourcing fruit under a long term leasing arrangement from the high altitude Alta Mesa vineyard in Santa Barbara County. Planted at an altitude of 3,200 feet (just under 1,000 metres) to Mourvèdre and Grenache the site provides fruit for wines that have both of impressive intensity as well as good stucture and racy acidity. The Core white is dominated by Grenache Blanc with Marsanne and Roussanne. It is nutty and lightly floral and fermented in stainless steel. A Core labelled Grenache and a Viognier are also made along with a Kuyam labelled Sauvignon Blanc. From a third label Turchi, Malbec, Syrah and Cabernet are produced. The Hard Core red comes from Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cabernet Sauvignon. Structured and surprisingly elegant there is a marvellous persistence of dark berry fruit. Candy Core is an unusual late-harvested Grenache which is rich, unctuous and concentrated. A number of other reds should also be considered, Elevation Sensation (Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah), Mister Moreved (Mourvèdre with a little Grenache), a Bordeaux styled blend Kuyam Cuvée Nolan and the premium Cuvée Fletcher from a variable blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre.
