Craggy Range Winery Hawkes Bay
This winery is named for the Craggy Range in Hawkes Bay’s Tukituki Valley, a stunning new winery complex has been built to process grapes from a patchwork of outstanding vineyard sites split between Hawkes Bay, Martinborough and Marlborough. Direction comes from viticultural expert Steve Smith, who established a reputation while providing high-quality fruit for VILLA MARIA. From the outset all varietals were concentrated and well structured with an extra intensity and definition not seen in most New Zealand wines. These include Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Avery Vineyard. An expanding range of Martinborough varietals include Te Muna Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, with an infusion of tropical fruits, and Pinot Noir from young vines which shows good potential. A series of ‘Prestige’ wines includes: Les Beaux Cailloux, a Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay; The Quarry, also from Gimblett Gravels, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot and a little Cabernet Franc; Sophia, Merlot-based but complemented by Cabernet Franc and Malbec; and Syrah, Le Sol. All show great promise.
