This is the best winery in the Pyrenees region and one of the best both in the state and Australia. The 18 ha of organically tended vineyards are planted in granite soils at a higher altitude than many of the neighbouring estates and produce wines of real structure and finesse. With an established reputation for outstanding Shiraz and Chardonnay, the Jones have enlisted outside consultancy and the quality of the wines continues to improve. As well as Shiraz and Chardonnay, Pinot also comes from the Hut Vineyard on the Moonambel Valley floor. A small amount of Eagle Series Shiraz is made from a tiny 1.2 ha vineyard which is very intense, classy and complete but needs 10 years’ ageing. Chardonnay is deep yet restrained with real intensity and structured for medium-term cellaring. Both the Moonambel Cabernet and Moonambel Shiraz will improve in bottle for 5, often 10 years.
