De Martino Maipo
This Maipo based winery produces a fine range of reds and whites not just from the home vineyards but from a number of other areas as well. The winery and its new winemaker Eduardo Jordan place considerable emphasis in finding the best potential areas for each varietal. The Estate wines as is the case with all those produced here come from organically managed vineyards and are upfront and approachable. The Estate is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Malbec. There are two specifically organic labelled wines, the Cabernet coming from the home Isla de Maipo vineyard. A Sauvignon Blanc is also produced and the wines vinified with a minimum of sulphur. The Legado labels are a step up and include Chardonnay from Limarí and Sauvignon Blanc from Maipo as well as a smoky, spicy Syrah from the newly established Choapa region. A number of impressive single vineyard wines are also released. Gooseberry and citrus scented Sauvignon comes from the coolest sector of Casablanca. Syrah is ripe and perfumed with a rich blackberry character. Perhaps best of all is the Carmenère, dark, spicy and very characterful. The top wine is the fine, intense cedary Familia, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Malbec. (DM)
