Domaine Drouhin Dundee Hills
Established in the late 1980s by Joseph DROUHIN and run by Véronique Drouhin, who controls the winemaking. The approach to viticulture from the outset was distinctly Burgundian: at the time she was one of the few focusing on high-density vineyard planting. The estate has some 35 ha (85 acres) under vine in the Red Hills area, which has a climate remarkably similar to that found on the Côte d’Or. The resulting wines are in a tight, restrained style but very pure with real depth and concentration. There is a powerful, dark berry character to the Pinot and the Cuvée Laurène has the refined, tannic structure to promise much with age. A very low-volume special release has also been added, the Cuvée Louise, which is a special barrel selection of the best of the material used in the Cuvée Laurène. There are two Chardonnays; Cuvée Arthur, is elegant and understated but with a piercing, mineral and citrus undercurrent. It is stylish with well-judged oak. A further label Edition Limitée is also made. The small range is completed with an Edition Rosé of Pinot Noir. (DM)
