Domaine Serene Dundee Hills
This is a top-class producer of both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Considerable investment has gone into the estate and the results are impressive. Yields are kept to a minimum – around 2 tons to the acre – and the harvest is always carried out by hand. Minimal intervention in the cellars means the Pinot Noir is only racked at bottling and is neither fined nor filtered. Chardonnay, made using only the Dijon clone, is barrel-fermented and aged on its lees for up to 15 months. Tiny lots of various single-vineyard bottlings are available through the winery and there is also a flagship Pinot Noir, Grace Vineyard. The Pinot Noirs are marked by their firm structure and dark, rich and concentrated berry fruit. Time is needed to integrate the new oak in both the Evenstad Reserve and Mark Bradford. The two Chardonnays are lightly tropical, with a fine, spicy, toasty oak character but with the firm structure that earmarks their cool-grown origins. The Clos du Soleil is the tighter, more mineral of the two. A vibrant Syrah, Rockblock SoNo, is a non-vintage example from Oregon Walla Walla fruit while the R Rosé is a barrel aged style. (DM)
