Domini de La Cartoixa Priorat
There are 11 ha of vineyards here which are farmed organically. The wines tend to be more fruit driven and a touch less mineral and sauvage in style than some others. The Formiga de Vellut is the most approachable of the three estate wines, coming from Garnacha, Cariñena and Syrah and aged in barrel for eight months. The dense and dark-fruited Galena is the second label, a blend of Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cariñena.
Vatting is for 15 days and the wine aged in mainly French oak for a year. The Clos Galena is altogether denser, more concentrated. A blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet, the wine has a higher proportion of old-vine fruit and is more mineral and nervy in character. Expect the top two wines to develop well for five years and more. Another red is made from other sources under the Crossos label. (DM)
