DuMOL Russian River Valley
Some very good Burgundian style wines are produced here along with a couple of excellent Syrahs. Much of the fruit comes from Russian River Valley vineyards. The wines are themselves labelled by individual brands rather than by vineyards with the exception of Pinot and Chardonnay releases from the DuMOL estate vineyard. Stylistically the wines are very structured and require a little patience. The area’s climate provides grapes with ample richness and concentration. Chardonnay is barrelfermented and aged on lees for 18 months and natural yeasts are relied on for both fermentation and the malolactic. The Isobel is impressively structured coming from the Charles Heintz Vineyard in the Russian River. The style of the wine is achieved by combining both an early and a later harvest ensuring excellent acidity as well as underlying richness. The Chloe cuvée comes from the Ritchie, which is some distance inland. The wine has a marvellous balance of intense fruit, real weight and concentration all underpinned by a mineral purity. Of the Pinot bottlings, the Aidan is opulent and impressively rich coming solely from Dijon clones. The Ryan is a touch more structured. Both offer concentrated dark plum and berry fruit and the mineral purity that characterises all the wines here. Aidan is touch more gamey, Ryan more floral and aromatic. The best of the Pinots is Finn which comes from two Russian River vineyards: Occidental Road and the DuMOL estate site. The wine has excellent acidity and fruit of great intensity with a rich dark-cherry fruit character. All the wines get a cold soak for five days and are fermented with native yeasts with malolactic in barrel. Eddie’s Patch Syrah is sourced from steep east facing hillside slopes providing fruit of very impressive intensity. It is the most complete but both examples are very full and concentrated with dark, spicy blackberry fruit and a mineral edge. In addition to the above, Russian River Pinot Noir, Syrah and Chardonnay are produced as well as a Viognier, Lia which is vinified without malolactic, a Chardonnay Clare from the Hyde Vineyard in Carneros and a further Pinot Noir Eoin which comes from the Sonoma Stage Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast. The wines will develop very well, the Syrahs for a decade and more. (DM)
