Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain
Randy Dunn was one of the pioneers of great mountain-grown Cabernet. He established his own operation in 1979 during the time he was winemaker at CAYMUS. Output is now capped at around 4,000 cases a year. The estate bottling, Howell Mountain, is a massive wine almost always offering formidable concentration and depth with real finesse as well. Ageing is for 2 years in half new and half used oak. The Napa Valley Cabernet is in a marginally softer style but is nevertheless a considerable and seriously structured wine. Both wines get a light filtration which Dunn believes adds stability but are not fined; retaining tannin is key to their longevity. Both understandably require cellaring, the Estate Howell Mountain for a minimum of a decade. Also noteworthy is the value offered by both wines in these days of extraordinarily high prices for Napa reds. (DM)
