Dyer Vineyard Diamond Mountain
The Dyers have both been active in the Califirnia wine industry for the past quarter of a century and more. Bill was the winemaker at STERLING VINEYARDS before moving on to consult in the Napa, Sonoma and in Canada. Dawnine was the winemaker at DOMAINE CHANDON. They purchased their 5ha (12 acres) on Diamond Mountain in 1992 and their vineyards are just to the south of REVERIE and VON STRASSER. Indeed they make the wine in space rented at the Von Strasser winery. Just one very elegant and cedary mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from their mostly dry-farmed vineyard grown in finely drained volcanic soils which yields barely 2 tons to the acre. The aspect is north-east facing and the fruit ripens very late, so there is no need for excessive extended hang-time here. The typical annual output is a mere 400 cases and most is sold through their small mailing list. If you prefer a more subtle and elegantly structured style rather than the increasingly popular big fleshy extracted styles emerging right across the Valley then it is well worth considering. The Dyers are also now involved in the new super premium METEOR operation. (DM)
