Edmunds St John Wines Berkeley
Small warehouse winery, a benchmark among California Rhône Rangers. Very impressive Syrah, which can stand comparison with some of the best of the northern Rhône, is made from a number of sources. Fenaughty Vineyard is planted at 900 metres and the volcanic clay-loam soils provide an excellent growing environment. Aging is in old wood to preserve the character of the wine. The Bassetti Vineyard Syrah is the stand out wine. Planted in sparse rocky soils there is a significant maritime influence with the vines planted just a couple of miles from the coast. A structured Rhône red, Shell and Bone, has been made from the Rozet Vineyard with its excellent calcareous soils is a blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah and Counoise. There is also a fine, fresh and aromatic white, Heart of Gold, which blends Vermentino and Grenache Blanc and a rosé, Bone-Jolly is also made from Gamay (DM)
