Elizabeth Spencer Wines Napa Valley
Elizabeth Pressler and Spencer Graham founded the Elizabeth Spencer winery in 1998, a year after they got married. Elizabeth was a well-known figure in Californian wine circles, having been involved in marketing, hospitality and brand development with several leading luminaries such as ARAUJO, DALLA VALLE, ETUDE, FRANCISCAN, HARLAN, KAMEN, SEAVEY, Soter, SPOTTSWOODE, VIADER and others. Spencer Graham was originally a restaurateur and chef and with his innate tasting ability, became the winery’s first winemaker. Sourcing grapes from a number of high quality vineyards, they set about providing value for money wines which would be both accessible and show the character of their terroir. The whites generally are more restrained than the reds, which display more vibrant fruit – particularly the Bordeaux varietals which also show more persistence on the palate. The range of wines produced is quite broad but in very limited quantities – starting from their entry level certified organic Mendocino Sauvignon Blanc (not tasted) through Chenin Blanc, Grenache, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, also from Mendocino, Chardonnay, Syrah and Pinot Noir from Sonoma and the big guns – Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from Knight’s Valley, Mount Veeder and the Napa Valley. A number of select wines are also available through the winery members club and released under the ExS banner. (NB)
