Ernst Triebaumer Neusiedlersee-Hügelland
Ernst Triebaumer (or ET) is one of the best-known names of Burgenland. From a total of 16 ha of vineyard, he and son Herbert are responsible for a wide range of styles. What is made in a given vintage depends to some extent on the climatic conditions. Whites include Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc as well as a light, elegant aromatic Gelber Muskateller and Grüner Veltliner. However the best grape is Blaufränkisch and up to 3 versions are made: Gmärk, Oberer Wald and Ried Marienthal. The latter comes from a vineyard of fossilised limestone soils and sees 70% new oak but is only made in exceptional years. All Blaufränkisch develop well over 5 years or more; tasted too young they can seem a little harsh or lean but with age the wines soften and become increasingly complex. Maulwurf (not tasted) is a pricey blend of Blaufränkisch with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Blaufränkisch Cabernet Sauvignon can benefit on occasion from a little more ripeness. Hauptsache, a blend of St-Laurent, Merlot and Shiraz as well as Tridendron comprising Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Blaufränkisch are also made. For sweet wines there’s fine Ruster Ausbruch made from Chardonnay, Weissburgunder and Welschriesling. An Essenz example is made in very small quantities.
