Esk Valley Hawkes Bay
Esk Valley wines are made by Gordon Russell and are deserving of a separate entry (also see VILLA MARIA). The outstanding wine is The Terraces, a blend of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Made only in top vintages, it is a rich, intense and powerful Hawkes Bay red and the group’s finest wine (recent vintages are 2009, 06, 04, 02, and 2000). Esk Valley Reserve Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec can also be very good if slightly more variable in quality, while a regular version is increasingly composed and characterful if not at the same level. Whites are good too, particularly the somewhat Meursault-like Reserve Chardonnay. Other varietals have modest structures but are attractive, ripe and fruit-accented, including a very ripe, exotic Riesling. The Terraces will cost an arm and a leg due to high demand but otherwise these wines are reasonable value for money.
