F-X Pichler Wachau
Franz Xaver Pichler is acclaimed by many to be the Wachau’s finest producer and it’s hard to dispute given the extremely high quality in his top Smaragd Riesling and Grüner Veltliner of great extraction and concentration. Certainly no effort is spared in maximising the quality potential from 7.5 ha of vineyards. The Loibner Berg is consistently the classiest and most concentrated of the Rieslings but that from the steep Dürnsteiner Kellerberg vineyard has great refinement, purity and length of flavour, while the Urgestein Terrassen shows terrific richness and intensity in outstanding vintages. If more youthfully austere, Steinertal has a beauty and definition that becomes increasingly apparent after 5 years or more. The Grüner Veltliners are marvellous too; a deep, dense and structured Loibner Berg is perhaps the finest of several made but a full, vibrant Kellerberg and intense, long Urgestein Terrassen are also top wines. More forward Federspiel examples are produced from the Loibner Klostersatz and Frauenweingarten sites. Of great potential if somewhat less typical are the special supercharged selections of Riesling (Unendlich – endless or never-ending) and Grüner Veltliner (‘M’), both highly concentrated old-vine versions that are high in alcohol.
