Far Niente Wine Oakville
There are just two main wines at this well-established (first vintage 1979) estate in the heart of Napa. The original winery here dates back to 1885 and was created from gold-rush money. Fruit quality is maintained through ownership of vineyards in five sites and covering no less than 95 ha (235 acres). The Cabernet is a typically powerful Napa expression requiring several years’ cellaring to be enjoyed at its best. The Chardonnay has been fine-tuned over recent vintages and is an unusually elegant and refined style with a well-honed, tight oak influence, a blocked malolactic fermentation and the balance to offer real promise with age. Its taut mineral style is in marked contrast to other Napa examples of the variety. The winery is also involved in a new Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay venture, EnRoute. (DM)
