Filipa Pato Beiras
Filipa Pato is the daughter of Luis PATO (below) and is at the vanguard of a talented new generation of winemakers. Her wines are made in Bairrada and sourced from diverse vineyard sources in Beiras including Bairrada and Dão. For this reason, all the wines are sold as Beiras Vinho Regional. Her winemaking experience includes stints in Australia and Argentina. The elegant, stylish terroir-driven premium Lokal wines are from leased vineyards. Calcário is from old vine Baga (80 years old) from Bairrada and is both fermented and aged in oak (50% new). Silex comes from a single Dão vineyard and is a blend of Touriga Nacional (75%) and Alfrocheiro Preto. Like Calcário, it is modern and well made with excellent structure and ripe tannins. Ensaios wines are less expensive but are bright-fruited and soundly structured. The white from Arinto and Bical, half aged in used wood, is floral, citrusy and fruit-driven while the red which is lightly mineral and spicy is a blend of Jaen, Baga and Tinta Roriz. Wines under the Vinhos Doidos label are made in conjunction with her husband and include Bossa, a relatively fruit-driven but leesy, tangy blend of Bical and Maria Gomes (excellent value for money), whereas Nossa Branco is powerful, textured traditionally vinified Bical – an excellent food wine – which needs time to unfurl.
