Flying Goat Cellars Santa Ynez Valley
Small operation specialising in Pinot Noir but lately making a little Pinot Gris too as well as sparkling white, red and rosé. The wines now come from a range of selected vineyards. Owner and winemaker Norman Yost has over 25 years winemaking experience in both the Russian River Valley and Oregon, ideal qualifications for making serious Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. The Sierra Madre Vineyard white is from Santa Maria with a marked maritime influence. The wine is cool-fermented and bottled fresh after a few months. It is an exuberant peachy, forward style to be enjoyed young. As well as the Rio Vista bottlings tasted here, examples are also produced from the Dierberg, Bien Nacido, Solomon Hills and FOLEY Rancho Santa Rosa Vineyards. The regular Rio Vista bottling comes from a range of Dijon Clones clones and is aged for 12 months in a mix of new and old French oak. Clone 2A shares a similar élévage, but comes instead from a single clone (designated 2A) which was one of the first planted in California. The Rio Vista is more classically Santa Maria in style with dark fruits and a rich opulent texture. 2A is more characterful and marked by red cherry fruit and a gamey, earthy quality. Both will develop well after two or three years aging. (DM)
