Forrest Estate Marlborough
Forrest Estate is relatively small Marlborough winery achieving good consistency. The wines may not be stunning but they have intense fruit with good varietal character and decent structure. They are not heavy or over-manipulated but show classic Marlborough fruit and vigour. There is an encouraging correlation between price and quality and these wines make a good solid bet especially if drunk young. John Forrest Collection bottlings, available locally, add a small premium. Newton Forrest Estate is a collaboration with Bob Newton producing Hawkes Bay reds from a vineyard in Gimblett Gravels. A Cabernet/Merlot/Malbec is something of a fruit bomb but has good ripeness and fine tannins. New Syrah shows more promise with similar fruit richness but more personality. Wine is also being produced from Central Otago and the new Waitaki region.
