Francis-Tannahill Winery Dundee Hills
Cheryl Francis and Sam Tannahill are both involved with A TO Z WINEWORKS producing large volumes of well-made easy drinking fruit accented wines from around Oregon. Under their own label they make much smaller quantities of very rich, concentrated reds and whites from a number of sources. Gewürztraminer comes from the Dragonfly Vineyard near the Hood River. The vines here were planted in 1962 and are biodynamically farmed and produce barely one ton to the acre. With great varietal purity and a subtle minerality, the wine has been fermented in stainless steel and aged for a year on lees. A further white, Blind Love comes from a blend of Roussanne and Marsanne, very rare for Oregon. The Hermit Pinot Noir, regrettably, is produced in tiny quantities and comes from the Pearl vineyard in the Red Hills stretches of the Dundee Hills. A third is vinified as whole clusters and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, shows fine edgy acidity and is loaded with rich, dark plummy fruit and black cherry. A further red, Sundown Red Wine is mainly Syrah but also includes a small amount of Viognier. It comes from the Rogue Valley AVA. It is also bottled without fining or filtration. Both reds will develop well with bottle age. (DM)
