Franciscan Estate Vineyard Oakville
Agustin Huneeus sold Franciscan to Canandaigua in 1999 along with the two sister wineries ESTANCIA and Mount Veeder Winery, although he retained his prestige QUINTESSA operation. The wines here are good and in most cases offer reasonable value for money. They are very much in a rich California vein, being very ripe, upfront and fruit-driven. They will show well young. Cuvée Sauvage is in a very rich, high-toast oak style and is vinified entirely with natural yeasts. The ripe, supple, cedary and forward Magnificat red will develop well with 5 years’ ageing or so. Other premium reds are Cabernet Sauvignons from Oakville, a Napa Valley Winemakers Reserve, a Napa Valley Clos Reserve and a Napa Valley Stylus label. Most exciting though of the wines marketed through Franciscan are the characterful reds produced from Mount Veeder. Elegant, pure and minerally with finely chiselled tannins the wines needs five or six years at a minimum, the Reserve longer. (DM)
