Franz Hirtzberger Wachau
The differences between the Wachau’s élite are more stylistic than qualitative and it is common to find that one producer pleases more one year or on one particular occasion and another at a different time. From 12 ha of rocky soils there is a pure pristine fruit intensity to Hirtzberger’s examples of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. The wines are structured examples, taut and concentrated, but beautifully balanced. Of the top Rieslings in the (ripest) Smaragd style, Hochrain is a classic Wachau example with great length of flavour, while the splendid minerally Singerriedel has superb structure underpinning the fruit richness. There is an underlying strength and intensity to Honivogl Grüner Veltliner, which, like the Rieslings, deserves 5 years’ ageing before drinking. Smaragd Grüner from Axpoint and Rotes Tor are also classic, Federspiel from the latter an excellent, more affordableexample of balanced Grüner Veltliner. In addition some Weissburgunder and Grauburgunder are also produced.
