Frog’s Leap Winery Rutherford
John Williams established Frogs Leap with Larry Turley, who went on to make superstar Zins at TURLEY CELLARS. The emphasis of the marketing here is on fun, reflected in the labelling. Pull a cork and you’ll see what I mean. However, the wine is serious and can be very impressive. The style is for forward, ripe, fleshy reds with sufficient structure to age nicely in the medium term and for rich, fruity whites. A small amount of Petite Sirah is now produced from Rutherford as well as an unusual red the Heritage Blend which combines Charbono with Petite Sirah, Carignane, Valdiguié and Riesling. There are also a few hundred cases of juicy rosé labelled La Grenouille Rougante “Pink” made from old-vine Valdiguié. (DM)
