Fromm is not one winery but two. One is in Malans in Switzerland, the other in Marlborough. Marlborough’s Fromm Vineyard is planted almost exclusively to red grapes with a strong leaning towards Pinot Noir (as are the Swiss vineyards). Grapes are also sourced from other growers, which provides more Pinot Noir as well as other grapes, including Chardonnay and Riesling for the white wines. A separate bottling of Pinot Noir is produced from the gently undulating 15 ha Clayvin Vineyard,. This complex, deep, classy and beautifully crafted Pinot is the equivalent of a fine premier cru red Burgundy and one of New Zealand’s very finest. The wines are made by George (Georg) Fromm and Hätsch Kalberer and the philosophy is one of low yields, fully ripe grapes and minimal intervention in the winemaking to give as natural an expression of the wines as possible. All sho good character, flavour intensity and structure but the range of wines produced from year to year varies. Only those recently tasted have been rated but Syrah is also impressive. Malbec, small quantities of Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc are also made.
