Ghost Horse Vineyards Napa Valley
This is the tiny scale home project of Todd Anderson who runs his family’s estate and winery ANDERSONS CONN VALLEY. The family labels offer some of the better values in the Napa whereas his approach here is somewhat different. Output is absolutely tiny, just 200 cases or so a year and the wines, all Cabernet Sauvignons, are produced by tiny lot fermentation and using every small scale hand crafted method available. Whole berry fermentation, vatting in small oak and multiple, daily hand punching down are all employed and vinification is determined by individual blocks within Todd’s small 1ha (3 acre) property in the hills of south eastern Napa where prestigious neighbours include PAHLMEYER. All the wines have an extraordinary depth and intensity of sweet fruit with a truly beguiling and astonishing level of complexity. The very best fruit is reserved for the top two bottlings although given the prices of $500 a bottle and upwards it’s all relative. There is a splendid Napa Valley bottling, while more expensive are the Fantome and Apparition, the sturdiest of this trio. A fourth label with very limited production is the Spectre. The wines can only be acquired by visiting the family winery in Conn Valley by appointment but you will be given the opportunity to taste all of them. They will also be delivered anywhere in the world. (DM)
