Grgich Hills Estate Winery Rutherford
Mike Grgich made his reputation at CHATEAU MONTELENA before going on to establish a formidable track record under his own label. All the wines are now coming solely from estate fruit and the vineyards are farmed biodynamically. Chardonnay is big, full and typically opulent in a classic ripe and forward tropical Napa style. It is aged in French oak and should be enjoyed in its first 2 or 3 years. The ripe and lightly grassy Fumé Blanc has its malolactic blocked for freshness, as does the Chardonnay and should be drunk young. Two powerful and firmly tannic Cabernets, including a pricey limited release Yountville Selection, are joined by a Zinfandel that is rich and heavily extracted with vibrant dark berry fruit, full of depth but a touch short on refinement. This is joined by a limited production Zin Miljenko’s Old Vine which is available at the winery as well as a round and plummy Merlot. Petite Sirah also comes from the Miljenko’s Vineyard. A fine late-harvest botrytised white, Violetta is also produced from a field blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer. (DM)
