Hacienda Araucano Colchagua

Hacienda Araucano Colchagua

Hacienda Araucano ColchaguaFrançois Lurton has been making wine in Chile since 1992. It was only in 2000 though that he established his own operation in the Colchagua Valley, purchasing a 200 ha property and commencing planting completely afresh, at that time with his brother Jacques. The vineyards are planted on chalky/clay soils, farmed organically with a coastal moderating influence on the climate, so should have much potential. There is a range of good value varietals produced under the Araucano label including Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Clos de Lolol is an elegant, red berry-fruited 50/50 blend of Carmenère and Cabernet. A Cabernet Sauvignon is also produced under the Gran Araucano label and a premium Pinot Noir, Humo Blanco also comes from a cool microclimate around Lolol. Gran Araucano Chardonnay is a rich and toasty, lightly tropical fruited barrel-fermented example being aged for 12 months in 50% new wood and bottled unfiltered. Particularly striking is the fresh, zesty and piercingly intense Humo Sauvignon Blanc, one of the best exanples from the country and comfortably edging three and a half stars. The top red, the spicy, dark-cherry infused Alka, is one of Chile’s best wines and surely the stand out example produced from Carmenère. Yields are very low and the vineyards are completely dry farmed. Expect it to develop well over the medium term. (DM)
