Harewood Estate Denmark
James Kellie has set the Great Southern alight like no one else since his first vintage in 04. Previously the fruit here was sold to the likes of HOWARD PARK where Kellie formerly worked. There is excellent quality across the range and that particularly remarkable quality/price ratio (especially in Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon) that WA can do like nowhere else on the planet. The fruit comes from estate vineyards (Chardonnay) or is contract grown. The Cabernet Sauvignon has the class and purity of good Bordeaux and a certain oomph besides, easily out doing comparably priced wines for quality. Arguably even better, Shiraz from Mt Barker and Frankland River shows a fine minerality running through its lush pure fruited style. Judicious use of oak for the Sauvignon/Sémillon Reserve makes for a food friendly wine, with an attractive sweet herbaceousness. Riesling from different sub-regions depending on vintage is fine, fresh and floral, its bright citrus acidity sometimes balanced by a deft touch of residual sugar. A significant proportion of the fruit is currently sold off.
