Harlan Estate Oakville
Small, very high-quality producer dedicated solely to super-premium Bordeaux-style reds. The property is located in the western foothills of Oakville and 17 ha (40 acres) of the estate’s 100 ha (240 acres) are under vine. Yields are restricted to an absolute minimum and output rarely gets close to 2,000 cases a year. The Harlan Estate Red meritage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In the winery vatting time is extensive and the wine may stay in contact with its skins for up to two months. Winemaker Bob Levy gets additional consultancy from Michel Rolland and between them they produce a wine of immense dimension and of great richness. Bill Harlan’s intention is to craft the California equivalent of one of Bordeaux’s First Growths and it must be said this is one of the state’s great reds. It is regularly over 14% alcohol, significantly higher than top Bordeaux, and the biggest difference is the ripeness and sheer opulent concentration of the wine’s fruit. The Maiden is a very impressive second label. (DM)
