Harrison Clarke Wine Santa Ynez Valley
Harrison Clarke are based in the picturesque Santa Ynez Valley region of Santa Barbara County in the Purisima Hills. The soils of the vineyards which combine clay, clay-loam and limestone provide excellent conditions for the production of rich, ripe black-fruited Grenache and Syrah. Both wines should be considered if you can get hold of them, they are real bargains. Grenache is super-ripe and full of black fruit with a pure varietal character showing through, albeit not the kind of restrained strawberry fruit you might expect from the Southern Rhône. Both also come from very low yields, particularly the dark, smoky Syrah, barely more than one and a half tons to the acre, and also key to their quality is the use of small open top fermenters and basket presses. The Grenache in particular is immediately approachable and the Syrah will add a further dimension with three or four years patience. A second special selection Syrah, Cuvée Charlotte, is made in even smaller quantities and well priced Grenache red and a Grenache rosé are released under the Harrison-Clarke Sorrellina label. (DM)
