Hartford Family Winery Sonoma Green Valley
Founded in 1993 by Don Hartford and his wife Jennifer Jackson-Hartford, of the KENDALL-JACKSON clan, this operation is dedicated to producing Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Chardonnay. Winemaker Mike Sullivan purposely crafts very Burgundian styles of Chardonnay and Pinot – tighter, more structured wines than many of their neighbours’. Both are good medium-term cellar propositions. Zinfandel is produced in a ripe, full style but retains real finesse. The Hartford label now encompasses just Zinfandel from the Russian River with a number of single vineyard wines from Dina’s, Fanucchi-Wood Road, Hartford, Jolene’s and Highwire vineyards. In addition to this an extensive range of singlevineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir cuvées are made under the Hartford Court label. Pinot Noir comes from a number of sources: there are wines from Velvet Sisters Vineyard in Anderson Valley, the Sevens Bench Vineyard in Carneros and Far Coast and Seascape sites on the Sonoma Coast. A Land’s Edge example comes from a number of Sonoma Coast sources with a marked maritime influence. Russian River Pinot is produced from the Arrendell and Jennifer’s vineyards. A single site Marin County example is also made. Impressive Chardonnay comes from the Far Coast, Stone Côte and Seascape vineyards on the Sonoma Coast, the Fog Dance Vineyard in the Green Valley as well as the Four Hearts bottling from the Russian River. All stand out. (DM)
