Heidi Schröck Neusiedlersee-Hügelland
Heidi Schröck achieves the same heights with sweet wines that other female Austrian winemakers do with dry whites or reds (see EHN, EICHINGER, PRIELER and UNGER). Her Ruster Ausbruchs are very good indeed – pure, spicy and concentrated but elegant too. The composition varies but can include Furmint, Welschriesling, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder and Sauvignon. A wonderfully honeyed single-vineyard example, Turner, is 100% Furmint and even better. But there’s more from 8ha of vineyards than small quantities of sweet wines. Dry whites include Furmint – actually off-dry but with a marvelous intensity of spicy citrusy fruit and a long finish – and a late-picked Weissburgunder which is very ripe, intense and lees-enriched. The Gelber Muskateller and reds are promising too. There’s good fruit-driven Blaufränkisch and a more oaky Junge Löwen, 50/50 Blaufränkisch/Zweigelt.
