Herdade da Comporta Peninsula de Setúbal/Lisboa
A fine up-and-coming winery owned by the Espirito Santo banking group, producing hearty and terroir-driven wines from the Setúbal area of Lisboa. Vineyards are ca. 35 ha, the location being an interesting warm, estuarine low-lying zone at the mouth of the Sado river, with sandy soils. Unsurprisingly, the area was important for rice production in the last century. Plantings started in 2001- red grapes are Aragonez, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet and Touriga France, and the white grapes are Arinto and Antão Vaz. Wine production is overseen by Francisco Pimenta, and Parus, a wine first released in 2010 has received wide acclaim. The red wine is complex, elegant with hints of allspice and crystallized fruits on the nose.
