Herdade Grande Alentejo

Herdade Grande Alentejo

Herdade Grande AlentejoAntónio Lança is a qualified viticulturalist who has been producing his own wines since 1996 from 60 ha of vines in a 350 ha estate that also includes olives and other crops. The winemaking facilities have been considerably expanded in the last 3 or 4 years and more of the grapes are now turned into Herdade Grande wines (rather than being sold to Esporão). Production is planned to peak at around 40,000 cases. There has been a corresponding rise in quality. A soundly structured estate white made from Antão Vaz sees negligible oak and shows a subtle mineral quality. The red estate wine comes from Aragonês and Trincadeira (plus 10% Cabernet and Syrah) and is a good, intense, berryish wine of adequate breadth and structure. Altogether more exciting is a premium red from 50-year-old vines (90% Aragonês) that spends 12 months in (mostly) American oak. It is rich, concentrated and powerful with lots of oak and extract but with the fruit to match, displaying a liquorice, chocolate, carob and berry succulence. It is likely to be best with 8–10 years’ age. Herdade Grande Reserve (not tasted) is only made in top years. Second label Condado das Vinhas red and white are soundly made but don’t show the same fruit quality as the Herdade Grande wines.
