JK Carriere Chehalem Mountains
Jim Prosser is the source of some of the finest Pinot Noir in Oregon. Indeed with the exception of a single Chardonnay, Lucidité, this is a Pinot Noir only winery. The top reds are impressive, very structured in style and always have high acidities and demand some patience. The winery was established in 1999 in Yamhill County and is very small in volume. Some of the areas best vineyards are sources of fruit including Shea, the Gemini Vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains, the Anderson Family Vineyard in the Dundee Hills and Temperance Hill in the Eola Hills. There are now some 9 acres of young estate vineyards which for the time being are included in the approachable Provocateur. The Glass Pinot Noir is a particularly unusual and very characterful wine. Jim Prosser refers to it as a white Pinot Noir, although in bottle it has a light salmon pink colour. It is whole cluster pressed, barrel-fermented at a cool temperature and aged on Chardonnay lees. This is very much in line with age-old techniques used by the French for Champagne and helps reduce the colour. The Provocateur is sourced from a number of favoured sites and is vinified as the other wines with wild yeasts and aged in used oak. The wine is softer and more accessible than the Vespidae Willamette Valley example. For this again a selection of sites are used and this is the main focus of the winery accounting for around two-thirds of the annual output. It gets a little new oak, some 20% and is dark, cherry-scented and very mineral with a great backbone and impressive intensity. Each year a number of single-vineyards are determined to represent the ultimate in what is vinified here. Arguably the finest wine the Antoinette, has a depth and firm, mineral character rarely found in the State. It will continue to develop well for a decade but needs at least 3 or 4 years’ ageing and decanting. A Blanc de Noir sparkler has also recently been added to the small range. (DM)
