Justin Wine Paso Robles
Very good operation producing some of the best Bordeaux-style reds on the Central Coast. These wines may share similar grapes to their French counterparts but are altogether fuller and riper without any hint of the rusticity or jamminess often found in warm-climate Cabernet. Isosceles is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, marginally more refined than Justification, which is just over half Cabernet Sauvignon, the balance Merlot. To these has been added a very dense, impressive Isosceles Reserve which blends all five red Bordeaux varieties. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon it is bottled unfiltered. A Paso Robles Syrah is now made as well as Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Zinfandel. Three further premium reds are made. Focus is a varietal Syrah, Right Angle is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah and Malbec while Savant combines Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are aged in top-quality French oak and there is a limited-release reserve Chardonnay bottling which is worth considering. A number of interesting special labels can be sourced directly from the winery. Prices are pretty good. (DM)
