Kamen Estate Wines Sonoma Valley
Estate in the south-western Mayacamas range with vineyards at an altitude of 335-440 m (1,100-1,450 ft), growing the Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well as Petite Sirah, Grenache, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Syrah. The meagre, volcanic, rocky soils rarely produce yields beyond 1.5 tons/acre, resulting in wines with great intensity and depth.
Three reds are now produced, a pure varietal Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, a Syrah, a Grenache and Writers Block, an interesting blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah. A white is also now made from estate grown Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Musqué and a Viognier is also produced. Winemaking consultancy is provided by Mark Herold who also produces his own Mark Herold Wines and was the former owner/ winemaker at the Merus winery. (DM)
