Koehler-Ruprecht Vineyard Pfalz
The predisposition here is for dry wines with good structure. With only a little more than half the 10 ha estate planted to Riesling there are also examples of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Barrel fermented versions of the whites are labelled ‘Philippi’. All show good ripeness, usually with integrated lees and oak character. Pinot Noir can be particularly good in the warmest vintages. Some Gewürztraminer and Scheurebe are also made but Riesling is once again the main attraction. It comes from the very good Kallstadter Saumagen site where limestone soils give vigorous, ripe fruited and minerally examples. ‘R’ bottlings are particularly good with added concentration and character, usually with a spicy botrytis influence. After a delayed release ‘R’ wines will continue to age superbly. Generally speaking, all the Rieslings age very well (losing any youthful reductive aromas) though there have been occasional exceptions. Bernd Philippi is also a partner in the Douro estate QUINTA DA CARVALHOSA.
