Kunin Wines Santa Barbara County
Well-priced Syrah, Viognier and red and white blends are all made at this small Santa Maria winery as well as Sauvignon Blanc from the Happy Canyon area. The regular Santa Barbara Syrah accounts for just over 1,000 cases a year and is marked by its rich, fleshy, forward fruit. Aged in a mix of French and American oak, a third of it new, this is an accessible, supple Syrah that can be broached with a couple of years’ age. More serious and complex, although only marginally more expensive, the Alisos Vineyards bottling is again aged in one-third new French and American oak. It offers greater depth and dimension, albeit in a similarly opulent, rich, brambly vein. Give it 3 or 4 years. An additional Syrah is also now released from the Santa Ynez Larner Vineyard. (DM)
