Labyrinth Winery Santa Maria Valley
Ariki “Rick” Hill produces top grade Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara County. The first wines emerged in 2000 when Rick joined forces with another Santa Barbara Pinot Noir star, Lane TANNER, now his wife. The name of the winery represents the problems of successfully growing and even more importantly gaining optimum flavour ripening from this most difficult of varieties. The ripe and intense Santa Barbara County Pinot comes from a mix of the Bien Nacido and Cambria Vineyards. It is subtle and elegant with excellent underlying acidity. The wine gets a cold soak prior to fermentation and some whole bunches adds to complexity. New oak is kept to a minimum, emphasising the wine’s elegant fruit and racking is avoided during 20 months barrel-ageing. It will gain from three or four year’s patience. Ther range has now been expanded with a number of very small lot released wines, mainly from Paso Robles fruit and released under the Haka by Labyrinth label. (DM)
