L’Aventure Wine Paso Robles
Newly established, top-quality operation set up by Frenchman Stephan Asseo. His 51 ha (127 acre) property is located in the favourable climes of Paso Robles Westside and the vineyard is planted on meagre, finely drained soils with a high limestone content. This, allied to the long sunny days of the Westside, provides fruit of excellent quality. The vineyard is close-planted and yields less than two tons to the acre. As well as the Bordeaux varieties and Syrah; Roussanne and Viognier are also cultivated. Among the wines Optimus is an impressive combination of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot aged in 100% new wood and bottled unfiltered. The top two red blends are wines of really impressive depth and dimension. The fabulously rich, dark, spicy Cuvée Côte à Côte Estate red is a Rhône blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. The Grenache yields barely a ton to the acre. The top Estate Cuvée is produced from Syrah (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (45%) and a little Petit Verdot, which adds additional grip and dimension. Very backward and restrained when young, it is a wine that demands cellaring for 7–10 years. Newly added but not yet tasted is Le Grand Verdot a red dominated by Petit Verdot with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah for balance. (DM)
