Like most in Kamptal, Fred Loimer has more than half of his estate planted to Grüner Veltliner but a quarter of his 25 ha is also planted to Riesling. He excels at producing both. The wines are precise but pure and expressive with real depth and length. On current form Loimer looks set to join the established Wachau/Kamptal superstars of BRÜNDLMAYER, HIRTZBERGER, KNOLL, F-X PICHLER and PRAGER. There is excellent Grüner Veltliner, a classic full Käferberg and more elegant and expressive Spiegel. Two cru Rieslings are beautifully made, a spicy, citrus and mineral Seeberg and Steinmassl with breadth, concentration and a white peach fruit purity. LOIS is a light but expressive introductory Grüner Veltliner. For more depth and intensity try the regular Langenlois varietals, which are excellent value for money. Also made are Chardonnay, a Chardonnay/Grauburguner blend called simply ‘Fred Loimer’, and Pinot Noir. For a new joint venture, ‘Loimer and friends’, grapes are sourced from Gumpoldskirchen in the Thermenregion region.
