Longoria Wines Santa Ynez Valley
Although he started his own label over 30 years ago, Rick Longoria, an experienced winemaker in the area, has only been running his own family winery since 1997. Production, as with many of his contemporaries, remains small and he is one of a number of producers with a warehouse facility in Lompoc. Albariño, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Pinot Noir, Bordeaux blends, Syrah and Cabernet Franc – in the guise of the Longoria Blues label of which it dominates the blend– are all produced. With poor consumer acceptance of the variety, Rick named his Cab Franc after his love of blues music. Elegant and cedary, it gains a hint of dark, spicy plum from the addition of a little Merlot. Syrah, originally from a number of sites now comes from the Clover Creek Vineyard in Santa Ynez. The wine is in a lighter, spicier style than some of his neighbours’ offerings. Firm and lightly stalky Pinot Noir Lovely Rita from the Sta. Rita Hills has some attractive gamy notes as well as impressively piercing dark cherry fruit. Single vineyard examples are also made from the Bien Nacido Vineyard and the Sta. Rita Hills Fe Ciega site. The Chardonnay Cuvée Diana is made in very small quantities and offers lightly tropical fruit with a full, richly textured mid-palate and just a hint of oak spice. A Sta. Rita Hills example is also made. The Longoria Blues in particular will benefit from 3 or 4 years’ patience. (DM)
