M & E Abbona Dolcetto di Dogliani
Marziano Abbona is one of the stars of Dogliani, but with ever expanding vineyard holdings also produces fine Barolo and Barbaresco. All three crus are aged partly in barrique and partly in large oak casks and combine strength with a certain finesse. Of the Barolos, the Terlo Ravera is from Novello, the more powerful Pressenda from Monforte d’Alba. A third Barolo, Cerviano, also from Novello, is only produced in good years. Some Nebbiolo d’Alba is also produced from Pressenda. In the Dogliani zone, where half the vineyards are, old vines in Doriolo are source for (unoaked) Dolcetto Papà Celso which shows a breadth uncommon to most examples of the variety. I Due Ricu combines Cabernet, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot. Also made is a white, Cinerino Bianco, from Viognier a Roero Arneis and a Favorita from the Valle del Olmo (since 2008). Now Marziano has turned his hand to producing sparkling wines from Pinot and Chardonnay in the San Luigi vineyard in Dogliani, starting with an extra brut rosé in 2007 and a white in 2008 (both dégorgé in December 2010), followed by a brut and a brut rosé in 2012. We haven’t tasted these yet, but it also appears to be work in progress for the producer as well.
