Macrae Family Winery Sonoma County
David Macrae sources Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes from the Bacigalupi Vineyard and Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the Stagecoach Vineyard owned by the Krupp Bothers at VERAISON in the Napa Valley. Winemaker Kerry Damskey is charged with making wines that are true to their terroir, all being from single vineyards.
The Chardonnay displays typical sweet Californian fruit, with hints of grapefruit and pomelo, with good complexity and length. However, it seems to lack just a bit of extra ‘grip’ to make it a truly top class wine. The Pinot Noir displays similar characteristics, certainly not a blockbuster, but with complexity on the finish and plenty of finesse although it could do with a bit more structure. By contrast, the Cabernet Sauvignon has a great balance between fruit and acidity with layers of blackcurrant, blueberry and other summer fruits beneath gentle, supple tannins. A very fine wine, indeed. A Merlot from the Stagecoach vineyard is also made. (NB)
