Marimar Torres Vineyards Green Valley of Russian River Valley
Based in the cool Green Valley appellation, Miguel Torres’’ sister Marimar established this operation in 1986, planting the small 33 ha (81 acre) Don Miguel vineyard equally between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Small plantings of Albariño, Syrah and Tempranillo have followed.
A varietal Albariño as well as blends of Chardonnay/Albariño and Syrah/Tempranillo are now released. A new property in the Freestone Valley on the Sonoma Coast, Doña Margarita Vineyard has been planted to Pinot Noir. There is a European approach to viticulture with high vine density helping to ensure low-yielding, piercing fruit. The vineyards have been tended entirely organically since 2003 and cover crops are planted to control vigour and provide a better balance. Vinification is typically Burgundian. The Chardonnay is barrel-fermented and aged on lees with 100% malolactic and a second label Acero is also released.
Pinot Noir is vinified by separate parcel and clone with a small proportion of whole bunches adding complexity. As well as the La Masía release, Mas Cavalls comes from the Doña Margarita Vineyard and there are three very limited releases from the Don Miguel Vineyard which are wine club exclusives, Pinot Noir Cristina as well as Pinots from the Stony and Earthquake Blocks. The wines are always restrained and well balanced with good medium-term cellaring potential. (DM)
