Martinelli Winery Russian River Valley
As well as her own MARCASSIN wines, here at Martinelli winemaker Helen Turley produces brilliant Zinfandel, some of the very best in the state; the Jackass Hill is a benchmark for all. Look out too for releases from the Russian River Vellutini Ranch and the barrel selected Vigneto di Evo. You can also find very classy Chardonnay and Pinot Noir here sourced from a number of sites. These are wines of real complexity and style, with a sense of terroir and place. Pinot is produced in very small quantities but you can invariably expect wines of at least ★★★, often ★★★★ or more. There is a Sonoma Coast example and additional releases come from the Zio Tony Ranch and the Three Sisters Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast. The Chardonnay is honeyed and toasty but always with an intense, mineral complexity. There are a number of single site releases of this too, with additional wines from Bella Vigna, the Lolita Ranch and the Three Sisters Vineyard. The Muscat of Alexandria, produced in tiny quantities, is made from 100 year-old vines, it is grapey and sugary but not syrupy. Syrah is also now released from a number of sites including the Russian River Valley Chico’s Hill Vineyard, Terra Felice (blended from a number of sites) as well as from the Vellutini and Zio Tony Ranches. The reds will undoubtedly benefit from a little ageing. (DM)
