Matanzas Creek Winery Russian River Valley
Medium-sized operation producing mainly Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and an increasing amount of impressive Pinot Noir. Matanzas Creek produced some stunning wines during the late 1980s and early 90s, and the winery looks to be right back in the top division. Small amounts of a powerful Reserve Merlot, a very pricey Journey meritage blend, a Bennett Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from the same AVA are also now being made.
Sauvignon Blanc is vinified in part tank and part barrel to balance fresh flavours with a rich texture, while the cool qualities of the Bennett Valley provide a subtle Chardonnay of impressive intensity. As well as these premium Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are also released under the Journey label. (DM)
