Mayo Family Winery Sonoma County
Sizeable family run winery producing an extensive and generally impressive range of wines sourcing fruit from both the Sonoma and Napa Valleys and producing wines in relatively small lots. In addition to the wines profiled here Pinot Gris from the Balleto Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast and an easy drinking red blend Libertine offer good value drinking. Pinot Noir comes from the Laurel Hill Vineyard in the Sonoma Valley with a pricier Reserve (£F) also made.
Well priced Barbera is made and there is a Primitivo from the Rossi Ranch in the Sonoma Valley. Also coming from the Sonoma Valley is a Merlot Los Chamizal Vineyard, “Meredith’s Cuvée”. There also two Rhône style reds; The Gypsy “Jessica’s Cuvée” is a Sonoma Valley Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre blend, while the Page/Nord Vineyard “Lilyann’s Block” is a Napa Valley Syrah. Laurel Hill Chardonnay is straightforward and fermented in stainless steel and there is an oaked example as well. Viognier is rich and peachy, going through 100% malolactic it should be drunk young and fresh. Zinfandel from the Ricci Vineyard shows lots of old vine character and rich and complex raspberry scented fruit.
Perhaps the top red though is the splendid Sodoni Vineyard Petite Sirah. Coming from a vineyard planted in the 1940s this is deep, dark and full of dark berry fruit and spices and with powerful but surprisingly supple tannins. If you are visiting the winery tasting room in Healdsburg its worth trying the Zinfandel Port which is also sourced from the Ricci Vineyard. (DM)
